The launch of this model line, the Silent was the premium model -- although it should be emphasized that the differences among models mainly involved add-on features, not the core mechanics. Smith-Corona introduced a still more feature-rich machine, the Silent-Super, in 1953. Models with an X at the end of the serial number -- and this is one of them -- added two extra keys to the top row of the keyboard. Notably, this machine's keyboard includes the numeral 1 and the character that nobody seems able to communicate with nowadays: the exclamation point. The Silent-Super lets you set and clear tab stops using controls at the right of the keyboard.
It has the pop-up paper support at the back, and a touch control lever under the top lid (in this day of electronic keyboards, almost everyone just leaves this on its lightest setting). If the quality of a typewriter's product is as important to you as the machine's beauty on display, I invite you to examine carefully. The cosmetics of this typewriter are quite good. The most significant blemish in the beige shell is the nearly inevitable scratch at the top left edge of the ribbon cover. There's no corrosion to speak of on this typewriter.
The platen (also known as the paper roller) is in very serviceable condition -- I'm guessing it might have been replaced at least once over its 64 years of life -- though I always suggest that when writing on a machine of this vintage, you should use a second sheet to cushion the impact of the keys. Everything -- as it did when this typewriter came from the factory 64 years ago.
He praises this series of Smith-Coronas, writing, "The keyboard has an easy, comfortable touch, " and adds:. The beefy machines of the fifties have the sturdiest construction.
In the documentary film, American Typewriter, the actor and avid collector Tom Hanks declares these typewriters from the 1950s his very favorite.
