Vintage oak flat file cabinets by Hamilton are very difficult to find in good/excellent condition. This one had seen much better days by the time I acquired it. Many drawers refused to open because the "cardboard/masonite" drawer bases had swelled over the years from liquid damage, preventing the opening and closing of most of the drawers. Paint and other stains were also present on the face of many drawers.

I again used old-school refinishing techniques taught to me by an antique furniture dealer. Each warped drawer bottom was replaced with plywood (for rigidity) and then lined with smooth, green felt. Every bit of oak was sanded 3 times: 60 grit sandpaper, then 120 and finally 220 in order to establish a smooth surface.

Wood conditioner was used followed by a Golden Oak stain. After drying, 3 coats of Amber Shellac were applied (with 220 sanding between each coat) to establish a glass-like "old-school" finish. 3 of the 18 small, side veneer panel-squares are wavy to the touch, but I did not attempt to fix those panels because they look good anyway and the glue-bond is still strong. You can feel, but barely note the minor buckling on those three panels.

This is a well-built wood unit properly restored and refinished for another 100 years of use. It is a heavy, solid piece of furniture, with smoothly operating drawers. You also receive a hard-to-find top and base, plus 2 extra top sections should you wish to make 3 separate units. I've seen people add casters to a single section and along with a top you can make an eclectic coffee table.

However you decide to use this vintage oak Hamilton cabinet, it will bring you years of pleasure with its combination of practicality and beauty. Dyker Heights/Bay Ridge area of Brooklyn, near the Verrazzano Bridge. As a frame of reference I got all these pieces into a Honda Pilot for transport. Using my wife's account to list this - I'm Mike.
